Coach Fairfield led the Muskegon Big Reds to the State Championship game and took down two-time defending state champion Warren De La Salle 33-21 to win the MHSAA Division 2 state championship.

That win was the 900th victory all-time in Muskegon football history (900-287-43) going all the way back to 1895.

Muskegon is the all-time winningest football program in Michigan.

The Big Reds, ended their season on a 12-game winning streak, finishing 12-2 and outscoring their opponents 561-207.

Coach Farifield's Coaching History

Coach Fairfield started his high school football coaching career in 1991.

He spent five years as the head coach at Holton High School before taking on the head coach role at Muskegon High School.

In his 14 seasons as head coach at Muskegon, Coach Fairfield has a 154-29 record.

He's only three wins away from passing Leo Redmond as the all-time winningest coach in Muskegon High School history.

Under Coach Fairfield's leadership, the Big Reds have accomplished a lot.

  • 11 district championships
  • nine regional crowns.
  • Two MHSAA State Championships
  • State runner-up appearances in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2022.

The Detroit Lions High School Football Coach of the Year award is a program that aims to recognize and honor high school football coaches in the state of Michigan.

The award considers not only the coaches' on-field performance and success, but also their leadership, sportsmanship, and impact on their players and the community.

Coach Fairfield will receive a $3,000 donation to his school's football program and will be honored as the Detroit Lions nominee for the Don Shula NFL High School Football Coach of the Year award.
