Grand Rapids Rapper Turns a Dream Lyric Into a Real Halftime Show
Some lyrics age well. Others end up feeling a little prophetic.
For Grand Rapids rapper Jameson Botwinski, better known as Sonny Ski or Sonnyski616, one line turned into a full-circle moment right in front of a hometown crowd.
In 2024, Sonny released a song called “Grand Rapids, Mi” alongside Gwopped Up $peedy and Ja’Leeyna. It’s a love letter to the city that raised him, full of hyper-local references that only really hit if you’re from here. Everything from local politics, Butterworth Hospital, and New York Chicken.
And, one line that always stood out to me when listening is how he rapped about having “Van Andel dreams, I can’t sleep.”
Fast forward to Saturday, December 27, when Sonny got to do exactly that. He was invited to stand on the floor of Van Andel Arena to perform at halftime of a Grand Rapids Gold game, where he got to perform that song in front of a packed crowd, and it wasn’t just a dream lyric anymore.
The song has quietly become a local anthem over the past year. After a big year and a lot of community support, Sonny and Gwopped Up $peedy, Lady Ace Boogie, and Bedrock earned the invite to bring that energy to the Gold halftime show to wrap up 2025.
In an interview with Fox17, he gave credit to SCOOB the artist for being the one who made the calls and got the Grand Rapids Gold to give Sonny a chance.
And he didn’t waste the moment. Before the crowd even got to that familiar track, Sonny surprised fans by opening the game with a brand-new, unreleased song dedicated entirely to the Grand Rapids Gold and the idea of going out and getting said gold.
Moments like that don’t happen by accident. Sonny is proof that when you pour love into your city and actually show up for it, the city shows up right back.
