Flu Cases Rising Fast in West Michigan Kids: What Parents Should Know
Doctors across West Michigan are starting to see more flu cases, especially among children, and they’re urging families to be cautious as we head into the colder months and holiday season.
Pediatricians say the flu is hitting kids quickly this year, compared to recent years. Many children are coming down with high fevers, sore throats, body aches, and coughs that seem to appear almost overnight. While the cold feels like it just arrived, cold and flu season have been in full swing.
Flu activity usually peaks during the winter. Last year’s surge came in February and brought an especially severe season that claimed the lives of 14 children in Michigan. That’s why doctors are encouraging families to take precautions early this time around.
One simple step parents can take is to consider flu vaccinations before the holidays. Doctors say this can help prevent serious illness or reduce symptoms if your child does get sick. For younger children, especially those under five, it’s a good idea to reach out to a pediatrician at the first sign of flu symptoms.
Treatments like Tamiflu can sometimes shorten how long kids are sick and help avoid complications.
Flu isn’t the only concern right now. Pediatricians are also seeing more cases of strep throat circulating in the community, which can share some of the same symptoms.
Simple Ways to Keep Your Family Healthy This Winter
To keep your family healthy this season, start with the basics:
- Encourage regular handwashing: teach kids to cover their coughs and sneezes, and try to limit close contact when someone in the household isn’t feeling well.
- When you’re out and about, carry hand sanitizer (the spray kind is especially convenient in my experience) and, use it before eating or after touching public surfaces.
- Make sure everyone gets enough rest and stays hydrated, too.
Small habits like these can go a long way toward keeping your kids healthy through the holidays. Check with your doctor to see what’s right for you, and of course stay healthy this winter West Michigan.
