
First West Nile Death Confirmed in Kent County This Year
A Kent County resident has died after contracting West Nile Virus. This was the first human case of West Nile confirmed in the county for 2025.

According to a release from the Kent County Health Department, recent mosquito samples had shown detections of the virus. These samples included a mosquito collected only 3,000 feet away from where the deceased lived.
Symptoms of West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus symptoms greatly vary from person to person. Though the Kent County Health Department says the majority of people who contract the disease don't show any symptoms at all.

About 20% of those with West Nile develop flu-like symptoms, while roughly 1 in every 150 people has severe illness.

Brendan Earl, Supervising Sanitarian with the Kent County Health Department, said in a release,
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of this individual. This tragic outcome is a reminder that mosquitoes in our area are active and capable of spreading serious illness. Prevention remains our best protection.
How to Protect Yourself From West Nile Virus
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer tips on how to protect yourself from West Nile Virus. They all boil down to protecting yourself from being bitten by infected mosquitoes.
The CDC recommends using bug spray, wearing long sleeves and pants, spraying your clothing with bug spray, and taking "steps to control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors."
Michigan Mosquitoes Being Monitored For Multiple Diseases
The Kent County Health Department says that it will continue monitoring mosquitoes throughout the area. Mosquitoes are being checked for not only West Nile, but also EEE, Jamestown Canyon Virus, La Crosse Virus, and St. Louis Encephalitis.
