Detroit Rock Duo The White Stripes Are Finally Being Added to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has unveiled its 2025 class of inductees, and Detroit’s own The White Stripes are among the honorees.
The duo consists of Jack White and Meg White, who confused the world by claiming to be siblings when in reality they were just former spouses. They formed in 1997, and at first started to shake the local music scene up before gaining national attention.
Who are the White Stripes and what is their connection to Detroit?
The White Stripes quickly rose to prominence with their raw, minimalist sound that blended garage rock, blues, and punk influences. Their raw, unique riffs have become iconic in not only rock radio, but as well in their inclusion in games like Guitar Hero.
Their breakout album, White Blood Cells (2001), propelled them into the mainstream, with a unique two piece sound that later inspired other artists.

After that, they followed it with the critically acclaimed Elephant (2003), which featured the iconic track “Seven Nation Army”, which is a song that turned into a sports anthem heard at events across the world.
The White Stripes have also been known for their distinctive red, white, and black aesthetic and their enigmatic public persona, The White Stripes released a total of six studio albums before they broke up in 2011. Their influence on the garage rock revival of the early 2000s is undeniable, and they inspired a new generation of musicians.
Jack White continues to be a big part of the Detroit music scene, operating his flagship Third Man Records store in the heart of the city. Not only did they shape music as a whole, they did it with their unique Michigan sound.
In addition to The White Stripes, this year’s performer inductees include Cyndi Lauper, OutKast, Soundgarden, Bad Company, Chubby Checker, and Joe Cocker. Special honors will be bestowed upon Salt-N-Pepa and Warren Zevon (Musical Influence Award), Thom Bell, Nicky Hopkins, and Carol Kaye (Musical Excellence Award), and Lenny Waronker (Ahmet Ertegun Award).
