Grand Rapids’ Hispanic-Owned Businesses Close Today to Make a Statement
Grand Rapids is a city that has been growing thanks to diversity, culture, and community. That's why today some of our most cherished Hispanic-owned businesses are making a powerful statement by closing their doors.
As part of the national A Day Without Immigrants movement, several Grand Rapids restaurants and stores are closing their doors in protest of recent immigration policies that directly impact their families, employees, and customers.
While it seems political- this movement isn’t just about politics, it’s about people. It’s about the hardworking men and women who contribute to our neighborhoods and city every single day, yet continue to face policies that threaten their ability to live and work in peace. It’s easy to enjoy the flavors, music, and traditions brought here by our immigrant neighbors, but how can we celebrate their culture while standing by as they are harassed and discriminated against?
Tacos El Cuñado is one of many restaurants that will be closing. They will be closing locations on Bridge Street, Plainfield, Kentwood, and Jenison today.
Tamales Mary has also announced that both their Grand Rapids and Eastown locations will be closed in solidarity.
These closures are meant to send a clear message: immigrants are an essential part of our community, and without them, Grand Rapids wouldn’t be the same.
Poncho's Tacos, posted a message in solidarity in their story, as well:
Maria Martinez, owner of Tacos El Cuñado on Bridge, put it simply: “We’re not here to take anything from anyone. We just want the best for our families, just like everyone else does.”
Today is a reminder of what we stand to lose if we allow these harmful policies to continue to move forward unchecked. So if you want to enjoy tomorrow's Taco Tuesday, today's actions are important to remind us all that our hard-working neighbors are our neighbors, no matter where they moved from originally.
