The 19th Citizen Police Academy kicks off Tuesday September 15, and you can sign up!

The academy runs for 10 weeks, with meetings held Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. until 10 p.m.

According to Grand Rapids Police, the citizen's police academy is has three goals:

  1. To educate the community in GRPD procedures, and pressures associated with law enforcement.
  2. To allow the citizens to meet local police officers.
  3. To provide GRPD officers to opportunity to hear from the citizens they serve.

Those interested in the citizen's academy will be given a realistic view of the department and discuss topics like community policing, traffic stops, use of force training, canine unit, and patrol operations just to name a few.

Participants also get the opportunity to ride with an officer for a shift.

Those interested should contact the Grand Rapid's Police Department. More info and an application can be found here.
