If you get a letter in the mail from the IRS you may want to take another look because it could be a complete scam.

The Grand Rapids Police Department posted on their Facebook page pictures of the scam letter that a resident received. The letter states that they have not paid their taxes in full and will face "garnishment of wages and bank accounts, property seizures, federal tax refund offset, and creation of a property lien."

If you get a letter like this do not call the number provided instead contact your local police department.

Since the IRS does send letters it's not hard to think it's legit, but here are some tips from the IRS on what to expect if they do send you a letter. They state that "careful reading is essential."
