A Michigan woman is dead after trying to save her dog that had fallen through the ice and couldn't get out.

According to the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, on Wednesday December 11th the woman ran onto the ice after her dog fell through into the icy water.

When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found the pond partially covered in ice with a section of open water in the center.

Tragically, they discovered both the dog and the woman floating in the water.

Local fire departments used a paddle boat to navigate through approximately one inch of ice to reach them.

Despite their efforts, the woman was later pronounced dead at McLaren/Lapeer Hospital after being transported there by emergency personnel.

The dog was also recovered but was believed to be deceased at the time of retrieval.

Authorities have stated that an investigation is currently underway to gather more details about this unfortunate event.

The community is mourning the loss of a life that was dedicated to caring for her pet, highlighting the deep bond many share with their animals.
