I remember my first time ever going to sleep away camp. I believe I was in 2nd, maybe 3rd grade at the time, and honestly wasn't a huge fan of staying away from home.

My parents convinced me to go, and my older brother was going to the same camp, which made it easier. Until the second-to-last day when I got food poisoning and had to go home a day early. Luckilly, this didn't spoil my appetite for camp for the rest of my life, and I spend several summers at one sleep away camp or another.

The question many parents face when it comes to summer camp is, "Is my child really ready for sleep away camp?".

According to our friends at iVillage.com, there are several questions you should ask yourself when trying to make this decision:

Does she sleep in her own bed all night?

Does she have any problems separating from you when she goes to day care, the baby sitter's or school?

Has she successfully made it through the night at a close friend's house, or with relatives?

Is this something my child wants to do or is it what I hope she will do?
