It turns out Detroit had multiple major events happening downtown on Monday night, and a surprising friendship is tying them together.

While Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions were taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Monday Night Football at Ford Field, just next door at Little Caesars Arena, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons was putting on a show for a massive crowd.

And thanks to some perfectly timed scheduling, the two unlikely friends were able to hang out before the game kicked off.

Marcus told Detroit sportscaster Brad Galli that he and Goff first met while golfing in Los Angeles. So recently, when Goff texted to say their events overlapped, he told Marcus that he was bummed that the singer couldn’t make it to the game since he’d be on stage.

But as Marcus said in the interview with a smile “We’re not on until nine,” and made it clear he planned to be there for kickoff before heading to his own arena filled with fans down the street.

And as a bonus, It was actually Marcus Mumford’s first-ever NFL game. He said he was excited to see his friend play (and hopefully win) even if he’d have to catch most of the action later.

During The Mumford and Sons show later that evening, he gave Lions fans a pass for watching the game on their phones in-between songs, and joking that Detroit was “greedy” for having so many amazing things. From the Ford F-150 and Jack White to Eminem and the Detroit Lions themselves, we’ve got the best of it all in his eyes.

Videos from the night showed Marcus acknowledging the overlap mid-show, joking about the city’s incredible energy and even cheering on his buddy Goff and the chants of his name between songs.

Two different arenas. Two different crowds. One very Detroit kind of night, and friendship.
