Kent County Deputy Dies From COVID-19 Complications

Deputy David Cook of the Kent County Sheriff's Department has died following a battle with COVID-19.

According to a GoFundMe page for Cook's wife and daughters, the 21-year veteran of the Kent County Sheriff's Department was recently admitted to the intensive care unit at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids and was placed on a ventilator. Unfortunately, Deputy Cook passed away on Monday, November 1, 2021, due to COVID-19 complications.

Tributes to Kent County Deputy David Cook

The Kent County Sheriff's Office took to social media Tuesday afternoon to pay tribute to the fallen officer.

Many law enforcement agencies across West Michigan have shared their condolences on the death of Deputy Cook.

The Grand Rapids Police Department shared their condolences along with the link to a GoFundMe for the Cook family:

The Ada Fire Department took to Facebook to share their condolences, as well, saying,

It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Kent County Sherriff's Deputy David Cook. Deputy Cook was a 21 year veteran with the Office who will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.

The Plainfield Fire Department along with the Sparta Fire Department and the Alpine Firefighters Association set up at Post Dr. and US-131 north on Monday evening to pay tribute to Deputy Cook as he was transported to a funeral home in Rockford.

According to a post in the We Are Westsiders Facebook group, somewhere around thirty police cars drove north on US-131 Monday night with their lights flashing, escorting Deputy Cook from Spectrum Butterworth Hospital to Rockford.

How Can You Help?

A GoFundMe has been set up for the family of Deputy Cook. While it was originally set up to provide meals for his daughters while he was in the hospital and his wife was by his side, organizers now say that the funds will be used to help his family with things that they need in their time of sorrow.

As of the writing of this article, the GoFundMe has raised nearly $7,000 or its $25,000 goal.
