WLAV’s “Uncle Buck”, Ed Buchanan, has passed away. According to his Facebook page, Ed’s birthday was November 6th. WLAV’s website says he was born in 1949, so that would have made him 68 years old at the time of his death.

Ed’s passing was reported through a Facebook post by a family member this morning. Ed died due to a heart attack.

“Uncle Buck” spent most of his broadcasting career at WLAV. He was one of the first radio personalities to play rock and roll in west Michigan. He started at WLAV in 1970.

Starting in 1979, Ed teamed up with former WZZM TV-13 “Eyewitness at Noon” host Dick Richards to do middays (10 am to 2 pm) on WCUZ. The “Dick and Buck” show was hugely popular. The two remained friends after the show went off the air. Dick Richards, who referred to Ed as his "best friend in the world", was heartbroken when he was informed of Ed’s passing this afternoon.

Ed returned to WLAV in 1995. He hosted the “Ed Buchanan Comedy Hour”, introducing listeners to great comedians like Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, and George Carlin. He was also a part of the morning show until his retirement. Even after he retired, Ed would tap into his vast knowledge of music and host his “Breakfast in the Basement” show every Sunday morning, featuring music from Michigan bands.

Ed grew up in Grand Rapids and was proud of his Polish heritage. He was often at different Polish festivals and events, including being a judge at the yearly “Kielbasa Idol”.

Ed loved his Miller Lite and could often be found at Bob’s Bar sipping on a cold one.

Per Ed's wishes he is being cremated, and there will be no services.

Rest in Peace “Uncle Buck”
