Mary Free Bed started out back in 1891 when a small group woman set out to help people who couldn’t afford healthcare.

To do that they passed around a little black purse, asking anyone named Mary—or anyone who knew a Mary—to contribute 10 cents.

Back then Mary was the most popular women’s name, and the group quickly raised enough money to fund a hospital bed for those in need

That first bed became known as the Mary free bed.

Since then, Mary Free Bed has grown and been able to help countless people.

Coming soon, Mary Free Bed will be opening up a state of the art Children's Rehabilitation Hospital right across the street.

Joan Secchia Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital 

The new children’s rehabilitation hospital at Mary Free Bed is expected to be completed in the fall of 2026.

Earlier this week a giant 80-foot-tall arch was installed over Wealthy Street.

This arch goes over the skywalk connecting Joan Secchia Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital and Mary Free Bed.

When completed in the fall of 2026, Joan Secchia Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital will be Michigan’s first children’s rehabilitation hospital and the ninth in country.
