Michigan Native Megan Delivers Game Winner in Olympic Gold Medal Game
There are big game-winning goals, then there are game-winning goals that change everything.
Michigander Megan Keller delivered one of those on Thursday night, scoring the overtime game winner to lift Team USA past Canada in the gold medal game of the 2026 Winter Olympics. The United States beat Canada 2 to 1 at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Milan, and it was a kid from Farmington who ended it.
Team USA was staring down a one-goal deficit with less than two minutes left in regulation. But, with the net empty, Hilary Knight found the equalizer to send the game to overtime.
Suddenly, came Keller on a breakaway in the extra period, she scored a goal that secured Team USA’s third ever Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey.
Keller was appearing in her third Olympic Games, and while hockey fans often associate Keller with Boston because she played at Boston College and now skates professionally for the Boston Fleet in the PWHL. But make no mistake, she is a Michigander through and through.
Farmington is hometown and she attended North Farmington High before heading east for college. To double up on her love of home, she wears the number 5 because she idolized former The Detroit Red Wings legend Nicklas Lidstrom. (She plays a lot like him too.)
And now, she’s getting to join him in a way. Another Michigan defender delivering pure heat in the biggest possible moment. Congrats to Team USA on their win, and to Megan Keller for making her home state proud.
