
Michigan Parents – Important Car Seat Law Changes Starting in April
Car seat regulations and laws tend to change from time to time, but there are some big ones that go into effect in April that Michigan parents need to be aware of.

We all want our kids to be safe, especially when we're driving them around in our vehicles, so what are the changes that Michigan parents need to know?
Michigan Car Seat Law Changes 2025
Effective April 2, 2025, the following changes are being made to Michigan car seat laws, according to an infographic posted by Trinity Health.
Under the current law, children under a year old and under 20 pounds are required to be in a rear-facing car seat. The new law will change that age to two years of age (or until they outgrow the height and/or weight restrictions of a rear-facing seat.

Currently, children under the age of four need to be in a forward-facing child restraint seat (located in the backseat of the vehicle.) The new law will require children to use these types of seats until they are at least five years of age or they outgrow the height and/or weight restrictions of the seat.
Under the current law, children younger than eight years old who are shorter than 4'9" must use a booster seat while riding in a vehicle. No changes have been made to this law at this time. Though, Trinity Health does say that the safest practice when it comes to booster seats is,
Children should use a booster seat until they can sit without slouching and the seatbelt fits snugly across their thighs and shoulder.
