It's important to stay informed of the latest health dangers regarding PFAS in Kent County. As PFAS testing continues, levels of mercury are also being monitored. Mercury levels have lead to new fish consumption guidelines at both Myers Lake and Bostwick Lake in Kent County.

On Friday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued updated "Eat Safe Fish" guidelines for fish caught from Bostwick Lake and Myers Lake in Kent County.

Fish in Bostwick Lake and Myers Lake were tested as part of Michigan’s perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) effort. Mercury testing was also included. All fish have some level of mercury. The results have lead to new guidelines because of the mercury levels.

The guidelines are meant to be protective for everyone including children, pregnant women, breastfeeding women and people with existing health problems. One serving for adults is 6-8 ounces of fish. One serving for children is 2-4 ounces of fish.

Here are the new guidelines from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services:

Note that the limitations on servings are all due to mercury and not PFOS.
