Many people have tried to find out if there is any scientific reasons behind the stigma, but surprisingly little has been found out.  Historically, we've seen a stigma against gingers unless a red head has been in some prominent position in society.  And since only 2% of the world's population are redheads, it is uncommon for one to be in a position of prominence.
