The Cicadapocalypse could begin this week!  Billions of cicadas are ready to emerge from the ground this spring and this week might be the perfect opportunity for them to do so.

The cicadas live underground for 17 years and then eventually emerge in the spring by the billions.  And this year, those cicadas will soon emerge in Michigan.  In fact, they might even start emerging this week if soil temperatures stay on the warmer side.

According to the National Centers For Environmental Information, "It is believed that the particular night of the periodical cicadas’ emergence depends on soil temperature. Cicada juveniles, or nymphs, emerge when the soil temperature at 8 inches in depth exceeds approximately 64°F."  And, this week, temperatures should be warm enough to keep the soil temperature above 64°F.

The forecast for the rest of the week is the upper 70s and 80s with overnight temperatures not dipping below 65°F.  Now, I'm no scientist, but it seems to me like this would be the perfect temperature for the cicadas to emerge.

GreenCast.com is a website that measures soil temperatures around the country and Grand Rapids currently has a 24-hour average temperature of a little more than 62°F.  And with the increase in temperature over the next 4 days, that average ground temperature should be going above 64°F and staying there.
