So When Exactly Will They Be Finished ‘Fixing The Damn Roads’ This Fall?
One of the biggest campaign promises that current Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer made was the pledge to 'fix the damn roads'. A promise that a majority of Michigan was begging for as we swerved and dodged potholes on our daily commutes.
But, that promise of fixing the roads comes with one small hiccup that we have to work around: the growing amount of orange cones accumulating roadside throughout the state. While, we appreciate the eventual product of their existence, the delays they bring are nothing short of a headache.
But good news, just as snow and ice are promise in a Michigan winter, that means the orange cones of summer are on their way out of the way.
Why does Michigan stop doing road work in the winter?
Safety, mainly. Not only would it be difficult to do road projects during the very limited days available with weather allowing the work, it's also unsafe for the construction workers that would have to dodge sliding winter cars.
So rather than leave those cones in the way for the winter, they move them out of the way.
When will road construction end in 2022 for West Michigan roadways?
According to MDOT maps, it appears all projects will be wrapping up in the next month.
On the west side of Grand Rapids, you'll see a lot of those projects wrapping up this week.
On Grand Rapids' east side, you'll see the construction around EB I-96 wrapping up around 11/05
It feels like stretches of US-31 have been under constant construction, but thankfully you'll get relief starting 11/15
And finally, it appears the final date on any projects remaining for fall 2022 is Just before Thanksgiving on 11/23
Each project is subject to weather and other changes, so you can always keep up to date with MDOT's helpful map.
