According to a release from the energy company, they've received reports from customers that they've received calls and emails that tell them that they have to pay a certain amount of money immediately or their service will be shut off. The calls appear to be coming from Consumers Energy, but they are not. The scammers then instruct the customers to make their payment via prepaid debit or gift cards.

Consumers Energy is stressing that they will never request that type of payment from Customers.

If you believe that you've already fallen victim to this scam and made a payment, Consumers asks that you call them directly at 800-477-5050. If you receive one of these calls, you're asked to call your local police department.

Consumers Energy also stresses in the release that they will never call you to demand payment over the phone.
