Let’s be honest when it comes to services or companies, monopolies usually raise red flags. Fewer choices often means less competition, and that can sometimes lead to declining customer service.

But in Grand Rapids, the city’s considering becoming the only residential trash hauler, and weirdly enough… it might actually be the best option.

Why Grand Rapids Is Considering a Single Trash Hauler

I know, only having one choice might not be ideal in most cases (imagine if every fast food was Arby's...) But, right now the city already handles trash pickup for about 90% of households. That means most of us are already relying on the city to come and pick up our trash every week, and so far, it seems to be working just fine.

In fact, our city has been named one of the most fair and efficient when it comes to trash pickup. It’s not perfect, but if the majority of residents have already chosen the city over private companies, so just maybe they’re doing something right.

City leaders say that transitioning to a single-hauler system could reduce road wear, streamline operations, and lower emissions. Fewer trucks on the road, more predictable service, and consistency across the board all sound like a win. But understandably, not everyone loves the idea of giving up options.

Still, if the city’s already doing a decent job for most of us, maybe giving them full control isn’t a bad move, as long as transparency and accountability stay part of the deal.
