Harbor Humane Needs Your Help After A ‘Ruff’ Year For Fuzzy Friends

They say when it rains, it pours. But in this case, the Harbor Humane staff is dealing with it raining dogs and cats with little relief in sight.

There's no umbrella you can purchase to guard yourself against an outpouring of love when it comes to a heavier-than-usual adoption season, and the usual 'fall relief' that animal shelters see, is missing this West Olive shelter.

They say that normally during the fall months, they see a significant decrease in animal surrenders, however, due to continuing problems from the pandemic and other economic factors, they have more animals than ever in their halls looking for their forever home.

They say on just Tuesday of this week, they saw 23 cats enter the shelter, which is higher than average even for the busy season. That leads them to a total of 207 cats on site and 160 in foster care, and that's not including the additional 90 dogs in their care.

Caring for that many animals takes a lot of love, and their staff is rightfully overwhelmed and overworked taking on this task.

How can we help Harbor Humane during this adoption crisis?

Right now they're asking for support in both financial and emotional forms.

They say due to being unable to keep up with competitive wages, they're having problems finding staff. They are always looking for volunteers, including having a special plan just for retirees who want to help.

So, donations not only help to care for the animals there, but they could potentially end up helping raise the wages for those that are giving up their lives for this cause.

They're also asking for people to consider fostering an animal or adopting if they're able. Harbor Humane is a no-kill shelter, so the sooner these pets find their forever homes, the sooner they can help more animals in need.
