In most cases, we’re talking about elevated E. coli levels, which can happen after heavy rain, from wildlife, or really anything nasty washing into the water.

Michigan beaches are tested regularly during the summer, and if bacteria levels get too high, health officials will either post an advisory or shut swimming down altogether until things clear up.

High E. Coli Levels Can Make Swimming Risky

No, this doesn’t automatically mean the water is full of sewage or anything like that, but it does mean swimming could increase your chances of dealing with stomach issues, diarrhea, skin irritation, or other unpleasant symptoms. Yeah, nobody wants diarrhea...ever.

Bottom line, take a minute to check beach conditions before heading out. The only thing you should be bringing home from the beach is a sunburn…not diarrhea.
