Sometimes you’re able to find the dog down the road or at the local animal shelter, but there are times when the missing dog and its owner are never reunited.

A Northern Michigan woman named Julie recently went through this situation, and thankfully this story has a happy ending.

Her white dog suddenly went missing on a summer day in 2024, and a year and a half later he was found 50 miles away after being scanned for a microchip at the Kent County Animal Shelter.

The Kent County Animal Shelter took this opportunity to share with followers on social media why getting your dog microchipped is so important.

This reunion is why microchipping matters. Collars can slip off. Tags can fade or break. But a microchip stays with your pet for life, quietly waiting for the moment it’s needed. When a lost pet arrives at a shelter or veterinary clinic, that simple scan can make all the difference. Julie got her dog back after a year apart. Not every story gets that second chance. Microchipping your pet doesn’t just give you peace of mind, it gives your pet a way home.

You can learn more about microchipping on the Kent County Animal Shelter website.
