The Spooky Side of St Cecilia Music Center in Grand Rapids
If you’ve ever walked by the beautiful St. Cecilia Music Center in downtown Grand Rapids and felt a little chill run down your spine… well, you might not be imagining things.
This historic building isn’t just an incredible place to catch a concert. It was actually founded way back in 1883 by a group of trailblazing women who wanted to bring music appreciation to the community. By 1894, they had raised the funds and hired architect Henry Ives Cobb to design the Renaissance Revival building we see today. Fun fact: it’s the only building in the country built by women specifically for music. Pretty awesome, right?

But what makes St. Cecilia even more interesting are the whispers that it might be haunted.
Over the years, people have reported some spooky stuff happening between their walls. Some reports include chairs moving on their own, some shadowy figures seen on the stage, and voices, even accounts of echoing through empty rooms.
One of the creepiest reports? The elevator moving by itself and items vanishing or showing up in totally different spots without any reason. (Sounds like ghosts to me)
Carla Messing, the center’s event and facility director, has had her own weird experiences. She once stayed overnight during a paranormal investigation and said she heard music playing when no one else was around. Her group also spotted a ghostly figure that resembled a former staff member. Totally chill, right?
