The U.S. Postal Service announced today that they are considering closing more than 10% of their retail offices.  Up to 62 locations in Michigan could be effected including the Ledyard Post Office which is at 120 Monroe Center NW in Grand Rapids.

The USPS currently operates about 32,000 retail offices.  They are considering closing up to 3,700 offices.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe explains:

Today, more than 35 percent of the Postal Service’s retail revenue comes from expanded access locations such as grocery stores, drug stores, office supply stores, retail chains, self-service kiosks, ATMs and usps.com, open 24/7.  Our customer’s habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business.

Many of the communities effected by past or future closings will receive a Village Post Office.  Village Post Offices will be run by local businesses and offer popular services such as stamps and flat-rate packaging.
