Almost every female you know wears a hair tie around her wrist. I have one around my wrist everyday. It's convenient when you need one handy. But never did you once think that it could actually cause damage.

A woman from Kentucky is sharing her story after suffering a severe infection from her hair tie. AOL.com says Audree Kopp noticed a red bump on her wrist which she thought was a spider bite. She went to her doctor who gave her antibiotics. However, instead of getting better, the bump only got worse which eventually led her in the emergency room and discovered she needed surgery. Doctors told her that she had 3 different types of infections which the bacteria from her hairband transferred into her body.

Dr. Amit Gupta, of Norton Healthcare in Louisville, believes that bacteria from one of her glittery hair ties had found its way under her skin, causing a "large abscess on the back of her wrist."

...bacteria on hairbands can easily pass onto the wrist and into the blood stream via pores in the skin and hair follicles."

Kopp says she will be using smoother hair ties (instead of glittery ones) from now on and won't be wearing them on her wrist anymore. Definitely makes you think twice about putting one around your wrist, as well.
